Welcome! You’ll find art tips and tidbits here related to the topic of children’s book illustration.
My name is Mark Mitchell and I teach classes in watercolor painting and children’s book illustration at The Contemporary Austin Art School in Austin, Texas and through my online course, Make Your Marks and Splashes! and a subscription program, Guest Group Critiques.
I’ve illustrated more than 20 books for young people and written and illustrated three, including a nonfiction for upper elementary grades, Raising La Belle (Eakin Press) that received the Western Writers of America Spur Award for 2003 for best juvenile nonfiction book and the 2003 U.S. Maritime Literature Award.
You can see some samples of my illustration work here. Here’s a little more about me in this interview by Meredith Davis, founder of the Austin chapter of the Central Texas chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and a little more about the Marks & Splashes course in this interview by Sylvia Liu, co-founder and editor (with Elaine Kiely Kearns) of the KidLit 411 blog.
I hope that you enjoy the blog and that our paths cross again soon!
